15 tips for the perfect staycation

Are you in need of a holiday? A refreshing cocktail by the pool or maybe exploring ancient ruins? I know I certainly do.

Today I wanted to share with how to bring your international travels home so that you can make the most of this pandemic at home.

When I’m not travelling, I never feel like my true self. Some travel for the food, some travel for the beaches or mountains and some love the history and culture. Following my tips you can bring all of that into your home and enjoy yourself whether you are with your family or significant other.

This post is way overdue, but it’s getting round to summer and depending where you live you may not be able to travel this summer.

So let’s get into it...

  • #1 Choose your destination -First of all I want you to visualise where you would want to be right now.

  • #2 Pick a theme- Are you dreaming of a lazy day by the pool in the Caribbean, a day with lots of culture and history in Greece? Or maybe even a mix of both?

  • #3 Set a budget- Even if you’re not actually leaving the house, creating a budget allows to plan how much you would like to spend on food, decoration and entertainment. The beauty of a staycation is you can make it as budget friendly or as lavish as you wish.

  • #4 Pick a day- We all hope for good weather but that’s not always an option. Once you’ve decided on the day tell your loved ones to keep the day free, or better yet surprise them. Make sure no one has school or is working on your chosen day, no one wants to have a conference call whilst on ‘holiday’.

  • #5 Cuisine- If you are anything like me food is an important part of any trip. Research some recipes for drinks and food that you would find at your destination. If you have good weather this would be perfect served picnic style or on the patio. You could even get the whole family involved in the kitchen as they learn about international cuisine. Check out my recipe page for some inspiration.

  • #6 Music- Nowadays with Apple Music or Spotify you can find just about any playlist. Find a playlist or even create your own. You can travel the world with music, listening to opera, pop, reggae or if you are loving the idea of a beach theme try listening to wave sounds or dolphins. Make it even more special by adding songs that you remember from previous trips to that place, something that transports you there.

  • #7 Make your home smell like a holiday- Freshly brewed coffee, delicious food and even scented candles will help turn your home into the perfect staycation.

  • #8 Make your home feel like a hotel. - Put out the nice table clothes, the fluffy guest towels and even change up your bedding. You can never go wrong with some fresh flowers in the room or even a little chocolate on the pillow.

  • #9 Dress for the occasion- Dress as you would on holiday, wether it be lounging in the garden in beachwear or even dressing up a little for dinner.

  • #10 Culture and history- If you’re the person who needs some culture and history on their trip, try to find some documentaries on the tv or even dust off some old guide books.

  • #11 Live videos -YouTube now offers live videos of places all over the earth. There’s something for everyone, a live view of the grande canal in Venice, beautiful animals in zoos all over the world or even live views of the sun setting behind the mountains.

  • #12 Learn the basics- You could even learn a few basic words for the country you are travelling to. Then when this pandemic is finally over, you can use these words on your next trip.

  • #13 Take lots of photos- Take lots of photos with your loved ones and all the activities you are doing just like you would on a real trip. Make some nice memories.

  • #14 Keep the kids busy- If you’ve got kids you can create themed activities for them , such as mini scavenger hunts.

  • #15 Get everyone together...virtually -This pandemic isn’t going away any time soon but that doesn’t mean it’s all doom and gloom. You can even get the entire family together on video chat, pick a theme and all ‘holiday’ together over zoom or Skype.

Keep things exciting, change it up. Maybe try a different country or theme every week or two.

Stay positive better days are on their way.
